I think the D40 is decent to start out with and I bought a good lens that I can take with me if I upgrade. I have a ton of stuff to learn though. Not real happy with these first two shots, I liked them better until I saw them compared to everything else on this site , I just wanted to post a couple and see if I could get some criticism and get started.
